·         When does registration end? Registration will close on March 10th, 2025 or as each camp session fills, whichever occurs first.

·         What forms are required prior to the start of camp? We require the camp application to be fully completed through registration prior to camp.

·         Do you provide lunch (what not to send to eat)? We ask that your child bring a lunch and drink each day of camp. We will provide a daily snack during each session. Also, although water fountains are always available, we ask that your child also bring a water bottle that may be refilled.

·         Do you provide snacks? We will provide a healthy snack for each camper daily. Please let us know ASAP if your child has any food allergies or restrictions so we can accommodate their needs.

·         Do you accept children with special needs, allergies or medical conditions? Yes, all campers are welcome. Please indicate any allergies, medical conditions, or special needs you child has on their registration form and how to best accommodate them. We will be interacting with dogs and cats daily and possibly other types of allergins such as peanut butter. We cannot administer any medications so please do so beforehand. We can provide alternative activities if it conflicts with their allergen/medical or cultural needs.

·         How many campers are in each session? There will be a maximum of 15 campers for Camp Humane Jr. & a maximum of 20 campers for Session I and II.

·         Is there a waiting list? If the camp session you are interested in enrolling your child in is full, please contact us at humaneeducation@AnimalHumaneNM.org. We will provide you with information for having your child placed on a waiting list for the next open camp session. Having your child on a waiting list does not guarantee they will be admitted to that camp session this season. If a space opens in any session and your child’s name comes up on the list, you have the opportunity to either accept the open spot or decline it and remain on the waiting list to see if another opening comes up. When accepting a spot, you will be given a specific time frame in which payment must be received to secure your child’s spot in that session. If you choose to decline the spot, we will contact the next family on the list for that particular opening.

·         What is the pick up/drop off procedure? / Where do I bring my child on the first day of camp? Drop off is from 8:45 – 9:00 am each morning. You will be required to sign your child in/out with a staff member at the time of drop off and pick up. Drop off and pick up will take place each day in Gary’s Room.

Directions: Our shelter is located 615 Virginia St. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. It is one block west of the Kirtland Air Force Base Wyoming Blvd. gate. Gary’s Room is in the Big Blue Building. There will be a sign outside directing you where to enter. It will be on the North Side of the building and can be accessed from the parking lot.

·         How are emergencies handled? In the case of an emergency, camp staff will contact the parent or guardian using the contact information that was provided at the time of registration. If you cannot be reached, we will leave a message and attempt to contact the person listed as an emergency contact on the registration forms. Please make sure this information stays up to date during the duration of camp. In the event of an emergency that you need to reach your child during camp hours, please contact

·         Who are the camp counselors? Our camp counselors are two staff members (Humane Educators) who have years of teaching experience. There will also be volunteers helping with camp. Our volunteers have been vetted and have background checks.

·         What does my child need to bring to camp? Campers must bring a lunch from home each day. Please also make sure that your child applies sunscreen each morning before camp. They should also bring a water bottle, hat and light jacket with them each day. To ensure there are no mix-ups, label everything with your child’s name.

·         What should my child not bring to camp? We discourage campers from bringing anything of value with them to camp. Electronic items, toys and games should be left at home so your child avoids the chance of it being lost or broken. Animal Humane New Mexico is not responsible for lost, stolen or broken items that may be brought to camp. Cell phones brought to camp should only be used to contact parents in the case of an emergency.

·         What activities are offered at camp? Campers will have some time to interact with shelter animals, but will also be participating in many other animal-themed activities. We will do arts and crafts, play games, have guest speakers and learn about many animal-related topics.

·         Will my child be working directly with shelter animals? Each day of camp will include time spent with shelter dogs and cats as the curriculum allows. There will be times to meet with shelter pets as well as other types of animal visitors. Our goal in camp is to teach responsibility and compassion toward animals and we will have many ways to reach this goal. Dogs and cats residing in shelters can be under a lot of stress and are in unfamiliar surroundings, so we plan animal interaction time with the pet’s best interest in mind. Your child should not expect to interact hands-on with a shelter pet for large portions of the camp day.

·         What if my child is sick and cannot attend a day of camp? Please let us know if your child will miss a day. Unfortunately, we cannot extend refunds for time missed during camp sessions.

·         What should my child wear to camp? We ask that your child wear long pants and a T-shirt or shirt they won’t mind getting a little dirty. Close toed shoes, like tennis shoes, are required to be worn during camp (no sandals or flip flops). We also suggest they bring a light jacked with them as the rooms we use may be chilly with air conditioning. Because we will be spending time outdoors, administering sunscreen prior to arriving at camp each morning is strongly encouraged.

·         What is your behavior policy? While participating in camp, we ask that participants treat other campers, staff, volunteers and animals with respect and compassion. We will review behavior guidelines with campers on the first day of each camp session. If a camper is unable to consistently follow these guidelines, they may be asked to leave camp for the day, or may be dismissed from the camp session. If a camper is dismissed for behavioral reasons, there will be no refunds available.

·         What types of animals will my child be exposed to? Campers will have the opportunity to interact with shelter animals (dogs and cats) as well as animals that may visit with our guest speakers. Depending on the guest speakers scheduled, these may include rabbits, turtles and tortoises, rats, guinea pigs, horses or rehabilitated wildlife.
